MIDIRS Informed Choice, renowned for the uniqueness of its style and accuracy of content is back. All 25 titles have been systematically reviewed and revised in accordance with the most up-to-date research evidence.
Informed Choice aims to assist women and health care professionals in accessing reliable, evidence-based information to support maternal choice and professionals’ clinical decision making.
It is the ideal tool for anyone involved in the care of pregnant women, new mothers, the new born and their families.
The leaflets
There are two leaflets for each topic, one for pregnant women and one for health professionals.
- The women's leaflets are designed to assist pregnant women, new mothers and their families in making informed choices, by providing the facts to help them make decisions that are right for them during their pregnancy and birth. The information is set out within a text that is discussion-based, helping women to explore the various issues and how they might apply to their circumstances. Further support can be found through an accompanying website resource; www.choicesforbirth.org.
- The professionals' leaflets aim to provide the health care professional with sound evidence upon which to base their practice, while also offering insight and discussion where the issues are less clear.
In addition to the 21 recently reviewed Informed Choice titles, four brand new titles have also been developed:
- Sexual health and contraception
- Screening and management of infectious diseases
- Anaemia in pregnancy, birth and afterwards
- Achieving optimal health for parenthood.
Biennial update
MIDIRS commissions the review of each title on a biennial basis to ensure that each one reflects the most up-to-date research evidence and practice development, to form the basis for best practice and shared decision making in maternity care provision.
The information is based on the systematic review and critical appraisal of the research evidence, a process that is both rigorous and time-consuming and involves researching thousands of references, sourced from numerous databases and websites, ensuring ‘no stone is left unturned’.
This comprehensive, robust methodology reflects MIDIRS long-standing expertise in the field of information provision and dissemination. Informed Choice information therefore provides reliable, evidence-based content regarding the ‘pros’, ‘cons’ and ‘alternatives’, relating to a vast range of topics and issues surrounding health and well-being in pregnancy, childbirth, post-birth, and into infancy.
